I arrived at Syrah a little after 8pm. The Gary Vaynerchuk event started at 7 and unfortunately I missed Gary’s talk about wine and his new book, however I did manage to skip the wine tasting which was my original goal. See, I’m not that interested in wine. What interests me is that Gary Vaynerchuk turned his love of wine into a multi-million dollar business using things like Twitter, Facebook and Youtube. He has been signed by the Hollywood power talent agency CAA who also represents Brad Pitt and Oprah. He used video to get his message across and he says that any business or person can do it, regardless of their industry. Although I didn’t do any wine tasting at Syrah – I was enjoyed a slight social media buzz induced by Gary and his powerful message. If you haven’t heard of him or are one of those people who still don’t understand how to leverage social media to brand your company and make money – you should definitely check him out online on his Gary Vaynerchuk website.
Many of you may be asking yourself…who is Gary Vaynerchuk, where did he come from and what has he done in this new world of social media that is so significant?
Because of the fact that I own a company called RedRopeReviews.com where we review nightclubs and host original video content, I set out in 2007 to see if anyone else had been successful with video reviews. Low and behold, I found Gary Vaynerchuk. Not only did I watch every single archived video, but I became inspired to do what I love and just KNOW that if I produced good content, even if it was taped with a web cam in my bedroom, I could still eventually grow a following, and in the end hopefully monetize my content and web “assets”.
Since Gary and I have had some contact throughout the last year, it was a pleasure getting to hang with him on his recent visit to San Diego. His book “Crush It” is currently number 2 on the New York Times best seller list and his book tour has been a great success. Gary sticks to his original platform – ‘If you do what you love and you’re passionate about it – you can make lots of money doing it’.

Gary has millions of followers, however – only a fraction of a percentage of them have actually started video blogging. Lots of talkers, but Gary actually did it, hopefully he’ll inspire you as well.
